William McCandlish for several years the High Sheriff of James County, and also its representative in the General Assembly of Virginia, married Mary Nelson Taliaferro daughter of Colonel Richard Taliaferro (Member of the James City Committe of safety 1774 & 1776 and brother of Elizabeth Taliaferro who married Chancellor George Wythe, signer of the declaration of Independence.
Their father was Richard Taliaferro of Powhatan who was appointed Justice in 1738 and sheriff of the county in 1741, He married Elizabeth Eggleston.
